Student Involvement

Students get the chance to produce a variety of music programing at WMRT-FM.

Marietta College students who major in Radio/Television at Marietta have a significant advantage because they can hone their broadcasting skills on WMRT 88.3 FM, as well as another college station and a TV station. Students considering careers in broadcast news or production will have abundant opportunities to experiment with fresh ideas, practice their craft, and provide community service via these outlets.

A student does not have to be a Radio/TV major to participate in station activities. Any Marietta College student, even as early as freshman year, can work for WMRT.

Students can gain experience as board operators, announcers and disk jockeys on WMRT-88.3 FM. Opportunities range from classical music announcing for an automation system to technical directing for football broadcasts.

A newly constructed integrated television and radio newsroom now enables writers and producers to construct even more original programming with specialized newsroom software and state of the art editing software and equipment.

Several Marietta College media courses will get a student involved in working for the station. Some courses that require extensive laboratory work in the studio include Audio Production, Introduction to Broadcast Production and Media Announcing and Performance.

During the fall and spring semesters, a half-hour long interview program, called Campus Connection, airs twice a week. Another student production heard twice a week during the school year is Jock Talk, an hour long, sports-oriented talk show.

WMRT-FM is also the home for Marietta College athletics. Student crews regularly broadcast Pioneer action live on the air and stream audio live on the Internet with the help of local communications consulting firm Offenberger and White, Inc., and www.MariettaOnline.com.
